   The Switch 2 is an excellent upgrade to the original Switch. Even older Switch games run better. It is everything I wanted and more. I just hope the joycons don’t develop drift and that it lasts the decade. Side note: I reccomend adding a screen protector right after purchase since the screen is too scratchable.

   One month review: I was thoroughly impressed when I got my hands on the Switch 2 on launch day! However, the new games truly convinced me to opt for the newer model.

   I’ve been a loyal Switch user since the original model in 2017, then transitioned to the OLED model in 2021, and now I’ve got the Switch 2.

   Of course, I’m delighted with its performance. While the battery life is slightly shorter due to the larger screen, it’s understandable. It’s definitely a bit heavier to carry around, but it’s still an absolute blast to play, especially with Mario Kart World and Cyberpunk 2077.

   From the moment, I took it out of the box, I was immediately impressed with the quality and feel of this system over its predecessor. The biggest single improvement is the Joy-Con 2. It’s much more comfortable, premium, and doesn’t look like a toy like the original. The screen is also massively better at full HD. Having owned the console for several months now, I would have liked to see free performance updates for tentpole Switch titles such as SUPER MARIO BROS. WONDER. WONDER runs at 720p in handheld mode and is borderline unplayable in its current state. I really hope there is a free patch to fix this, but I fear that better performance will be locked behind the paid update next year, as is the case with THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD, and its sequel, TEARS OF THE KINDGOM. In the later’s case, subscribers of the NSO + EXPANSION PACK can download the update for free.

   One might argue that it’s unfair to expect Nintendo to patch previous-gen titles for their new system, but I’m sure most would agree that Switch 2 owners would prefer not to carry around two devices, and given that Nintendo announced backwards compatibility as an incentive to upgrade, it would be courteous of them to patch classic Switch titles at a time when the Switch 2 is severely lacking in exclusive next-gen software. I have logged 80 hours and 60 hours into MARIO KART WORLD and DONKEY KONG BANANZA, respectively. For major first-party exclusive content for Switch 2, all we have for the remainder of 2024 is KIRBY AIR RIDERS and HYRULE WARRIORS: AGE OF IMPRISONMENT. I mostly play in docked mode, and lately if I play my Switch 2 at all, it is for SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE, and SPLATOON 3. I will credit Nintendo for improving on SPLATOON 3 and SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY performance very quickly and without charge.

   For all its faults, the Nintendo Switch 2 is an excellent successor to the original Nintendo Switch in its hardware capabilities. I strongly feel that it will become a worthy successor once it has had time to grow its exclusive library. In the meantime, I would advise reluctant shoppers to wait. Titles such as METROID PRIME 4: BEYOND and POKÉMON LEGENDS: Z-A will have Switch 2 patches available for the original Switch versions, so there’s no rush for consumers interested in those titles specifically.

   I cannot count the number of hours I spent on my Switch 1. From playing inside, outside, and everywhere in between, the Switch 1 has been a steady companion giving nothing but joy, and asking for nothing in return. Sure, there have been negatives like drift (Left Joy-Con getting drift 5 times, but Nintendo still does repairs for free). I can’t personally play handheld too long, or I get hand cramps. Those gripes aside, the Switch 2 was simply better than I expected it to be.

   With the Switch 2 now in hand, I can confidently say that hand cramps have largely been eliminated. I can play significantly longer than I could on the Switch 1, and all by virtue of the fact that Nintendo simply made them larger. Drift?we’ll know soon enough whether Nintendo has redesigned them to withstand gaming. It’s only been 3 months…

   What shocked me is how great the screen is. I play docked more than I do handheld, but the full 1080p screen makes it worth playing handheld more than I ever did with the Switch 1. The HDR(punches up the graphics) isn’t just some buzzword. It really makes everything look better. I don’t have a 4K TV, but when I do, I’ll be playing games docked at 4k, but will probably pay extra to take advantage of 120 FPS when I do.

   Chat works. Both docked and handheld. Didn’t get the camera, but you can use a phone if you have the right cables.

   The one thing I am the most happy about are the Switch 2’s load times ON SWITCH INTERNAL STORAGE. Waframe could take 2 to 3 minutes. It’s now about 30 seconds. Tears of the Kingdom is about 15. I don’t have one of the newer microSD Express card’s, but with an average of 800 bits per second, I’m sure they’re only 10 seconds or more.

   Now to gripes.
   $500 is a tall order for anyone. That can be half month’s rent! So, saving up is one way to go about it, but Best Buy does have good financing options. Adding gift cards to your account(KEEP THAT PASSWORD SAFE) is also a way.
   Battery life can be 3 hours, but most people average 2. That’s why there’s a second USB-C port on the top.
   My hands still cramp, but that’s after maybe 2 hours. It’s a Me thing. What it really is for me is that my thumb hates the placement of the right joycon buttons and sticks. If the Switch 1 never bothered you, you’re good to go.
   Mouse mode can be a bit awkward, but the Switch 2 allows some 3rd party mice, so that can be dealt with.

   Overall, I give the Switch 2 a 9/10. I can finally play handheld on a console that was meant for it, and with a full HD screen. Time-sensitive hand cramps and battery life aside, this is better than the Switch 1.

   The screen on the Switch 2 is fantastic, in my experience it actually outperforms the OLED model in both color depth and blacks. The bigger size makes handheld play more immersive, and HDR really pops.

   I mostly play docked, and with the upscaling to 4K it looks sharp and smooth on my TV. Handheld feels premium too, so it’s a win on both ends.

   What really surprised me is how much faster and smoother everything feels — even older Switch games benefit from the upgraded hardware, with quicker load times and steadier performance.

   Battery life is solid for what this system does, so no complaints there. For me, this is a full 5-star upgrade.

   Note: A lot of people assume “LCD = downgrade from OLED,” but that’s not the case here. This panel really shines and proves it can match and even beat the OLED version in color and black.

   The digital library wasn’t the best to setup. No youtube app still, you know about the game card issue and the battery life is not the best.

   Still so happy to get a new system. Ive been getting nintendo handhelds since i was a kid and i still get that joy getting a new. The consol feels great to play in handheld. Love playing cronos the new dawn on this thing and really want to play that star wars outlaws game.

   If you’re the type that gets all the consoles than maybe this isnt for you but its a premium machine for sure and i loved getting it.
