The Indianapolis Colts signing free agent cornerback Charvarius Ward was named one of the 10 best moves during free agency by CBS Sports.
Cody Benjamin recently listed his top 10 moves of free agency and what he liked about each signing. Coming in at No. 10 on Benjamin’s list was the Colts‘ addition of Ward.
“Indianapolis may not be a wellspring of Super Bowl hope with Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson set to battle at quarterback,” wrote Benjamin, “but the defense should be much more respectable defending the pass with Ward in tow as the new No. 1 cover man. Despite a trying finish with the 49ers, he turned in championship-level showings with both San Francisco and the Kansas City Chiefs. Fresh scenery should do him well.”
The Colts’ secondary needed a major overhaul after ranking in the bottom third of the NFL last season in completion rate allowed, yards per pass attempt, pass deflections, and passer rating. After the season, GM Chris Ballard said that the play on the back end had to improve, and he showcased his willingness to make that happen by not only signing Ward but also safety Cam Bynum.
Ward is just one season removed from being an All-Pro and he brings championship experience to the Colts, having won a Super Bowl with Kansas City while appearing in another with San Francisco.
But beyond the production and accolades, Ward is a very good fit for Lou Anarumo’s defensive scheme. In fact, recently, Anarumo highlighted what Ward will add to the Colts’ defense and mentioned his length, his ability to excel in press coverage, and ball production.
Ward’s ability to play on an island, be aggressive in coverage, and operate from a variety of alignments is going to be valuable in getting the most out of Anarumo’s scheme.
