Colorado decided it was prime time to give Deion Sanders a raise for all the football coach has done for the program on and off the field.
The Buffaloes rewarded Coach Prime on Friday with a five-year contract that is worth a total of $54 million.
BREAKING: Colorado’s board of regents have approved a new 5-yr, $54 million contract for head coach Deion Sanders that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country. Yearly base salary breakdown:

Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders on his new contract extension with the #CUBuffs: “I’m excited for the opportunity to continue building something special here at Colorado. We’ve just scratched the surface of what this program can be. It’s not just about football; it’s about developing…

The contract puts Sanders among the top 10 paid in college football.
Deion Sanders’ new 5 year, $54M contract with Colorado makes him the 4th highest average paid NCAAF coach.
1. Kirby Smart, $13.2M
2. Ryan Day, $12.5M
3. Dabo Swinney, $11.1M
4. Deion Sanders, $10.8M
5. Steve Sarkisian, $10.6M— Spotrac (@spotrac) March 28, 2025
Since arriving in Boulder, Sanders has taken a perennial struggling program into a strong one. His son Shedeur Sanders is expected to be a high draft pick along with two-way star Travis Hunter. If/when Shedeur Sanders and Hunter are drafted in the first round, it would make Sanders a first-round NFL draft pick who also coached collegiately and had his players go on to become first-round picks.
Deion Sanders is 13-12 but the Buffs were 9-4 in 2024, his second season.
#CUBuffs President Todd Saliman: “Today is an exciting day. We move forward with Coach (Deion) Sanders for another five years. … He has brought excitement back to CU football and we’re thrilled that he’ll be sticking around.”
