Charles Barkley disses Alabama State mascot calls it ‘wimpy’ on national TV

During halftime of the Alabama basketball vs Robert Morris NCAA Tournament first-round game, Alabama State caught a stray from Charles Barkley.

Barkley, an Auburn basketball legend and NBA Hall of Fame member, called out the Alabama State Hornets mascot in a game the truTV halftime show crew was playing matching logos to the correct college basketball program.

Barkley knew the logo when it came up. But he was not impressed.

“That’s a little wimpy hornet, not going to lie,” Barkley said.

Stinger, the Alabama State Hornets mascot, performs during the first half against the Auburn Tigers in the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena on March 20, 2025 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Auburn, where Barkley went to school, is 55 miles from Montgomery, the home of Alabama State.

ASU won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game, beating Saint Francis on a last-second basket Tuesday in the First Four. The Hornets lost to Auburn 83-63 in the round of 64 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, on Thursday.
