🔴 LIVE: Newcastle double lead against Liverpool in EFL Cup final

Liverpool and Newcastle meet at Wembley with the EFL Cup on the line.

As tends to be the case in finals, the game got off to a cagey start with most of the play taking place in midfield with very few chances. 

Sandro Tonali came closest to breaking the deadlock just after the 20 minute mark, but his rasping drive went well wide of Caoimhín Kelleher’s post. 

The game finally sprang into action in added time of a slow first half when Dan Burn powered a brilliant header home from Kieran Trippier’s corner. It was a fully deserved opener for the Magpies, who were the better side for the first 45 minutes.

The Magpies momentarily though they had doubled their lead minutes into the second half when Alexander Isak tapped home from two yards out. However, Bruno Guimarães was offside and blocking the view of Kelleher, leading to VAR disallowing it. 

Moments later, the Swedish striker did score with a brilliant strike, smashing Jacob Murphy’s knockdown into the bottom corner. 

Liverpool finally kicked into gear at 2-0 down, substitute Curtis Jones forcing a fine save from Nick Pope, before Isak almost ended the game as a contest. Like his opposite number, Kelleher did very well to keep his side alive.
